Three Bangladeshis killed in ‘drunk shooting’ by BSF man

At least three people including a mother and her child were shot dead and another was injured yesterday as a ‘drunken’ member of Indian Border Security Force (BSF) ran amok at Majhipara of Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh.

The villagers caught the BSF member with firearms and handed him over to the BDR.  The deceased were identified as Majeda Begum, 30, her two-year-old son Mamun and Golam Mostafa, 55. Majeda’s husband Shahidul Isalm, 40, sustained bullet injuries in the incident. His condition was stated to be critical. A BDR high-up confirmed the killings of three Bangladeshis and the detention of a BSF member.

Taherul Islam, officer-in-charge of Tetulia Police Station, told The Daily Star, “A BSF member in uniform intruded into Bangladesh territory at about 10:00pm and attacked the house of Shahidul Islam. He started firing indiscriminately killing Majeda, her son Mamun and their neighbour Mostafa on the spot.”

“Shahidul received two bullets during the attack,” the OC said. At one stage, the villagers caught the BSF member and beat him up. Quoting the villagers, the OC said the BSF member was drunk. On information, BDR members rushed to the scene and took the BSF member into their custody. Sources said tension ran high in the area after the incident. Reported by The Daily Star.

Engaged to Kill (2006)

Dr. Abby Lord is a pediatrician. Her husband Robert sells boats. They have a 19-year-old daughter Maddy who is in college and somewhat rebellious, and a 14-year-old son Corey who loves computer games.

When Abby is kidnapped, the ransom is one million dollars. Robert will do anything to get his wife back, and that includes not telling the police–if he does, he has been told, Abby will die. Lester Denton can get Robert the money; Robert owns a business, the nice home his family lives in and even a vacation home, all of which he could lose if he can’t pay back the money, but he is dealing with legitimate businesses, not loan sharks.

We never see the kidnapper’s face, at least not early in the movie. But his accomplice and girlfriend is a sweet young woman named Sally who is either too dumb to realize that what she is doing is wrong, or too dependent on her boyfriend to question his actions. Abby behaves admirably on learning Sally feels sick; as a doctor, she must put the patient’s health above other concerns.

Abby is released relatively quickly, but her nightmare is not over. Certain people are behaving suspiciously, and there are some genuinely scary moments. And then weird things start happening.

Robert must work hard to get enough money to repay his creditors, and this means dealing with Crawford Blake, who was once his partner and is now his competitor.

And Maddy has a new boyfriend named Nick, who is 25 years old. Abby and Robert have enough stress in their life without this.

This was pretty good for a TV-movie. It was entertaining to watch the family’s situation get worse and worse.

I will say the actor playing the kidnapper did an impressive job, but I can’t say who he is. Daniella Evangelista was so sweet and I hated that we didn’t see more of her. And despite her rebellious nature, Katharine Isabelle’s character was so easy to like. Plus she looked good topless, at least from the back. Shame on anyone for calling her fat (I can’t remember now whether it was her brother or someone considering dating her).

Maria del Mar played a strong character, but one that could be pushed too far. She wasn’t superwoman. Plus she was as pretty as the daughter, and they looked so much alike.

I was disturbed by Robert’s anger toward his son in one scene. I suppose stress could be blamed, but it just seemed extreme.

The V-chip rating was TV-14, with a V, though it needed an S too. My theory is that the sexual content was PG, though the violence wasn’t that bad. Perhaps the logic in the TV-14 rating was that this was too adult, for other reasons.

Overall, a good effort.

Tragic accident killed teenager

Investigators say the Ontario teenager who ran away from home after being banned from playing a video game his parents said he was addicted to likely died after falling from a tree in the woods.

But it’s still unclear how long 15-year-old Brandon Crisp survived outdoors in fall conditions wearing just a T-shirt before he perished.

Autopsy results on the body of the diminutive high school student, found more than three weeks after he went missing following a fight with his parents over what they called his obsession with the Xbox video game, show he died of injuries to the chest.

“(Provincial police are) still at the scene trying to piece together the hours leading up to his death,” Barrie police Sgt. Dave Goodbrand said Saturday after autopsy results were released by the chief coroner’s office in Toronto.

“We’re assisting them in trying to build a timeline and determine exactly why he was where he was and what led to his death.”

Using dental records, the coroner confirmed the body found beside a tree Wednesday by hunters was indeed Brandon’s.

The boy’s parents, who at one point feared their son might have been lured by other online gamers, were told of the findings Friday night.

They had spoken out about the grip video games had on their son during the search for him, and at one point acknowledged even they didn’t realize just how much gaming meant to Brandon.

But they remained in seclusion over the weekend, asking for privacy as they dealt with the news that foul play had been ruled out in their son’s death.

“It’s a very difficult time for them, they’re taking it very hard,” Goodbrand said. “This is tragic news for everybody involved.”

Police and civilians conducted several ground searches during the weeks that the boy was missing. But they failed to turn up meaningful clues.

Microsoft, maker of the Xbox game console, also provided assistance in a cyber search, based on the possibility the teen had met up with a friend made while playing the Internet-linked game, or even that he had been abducted.

“Our thoughts and sympathies go out to the family, because this is one of the ultimate, devastating consequences of these kinds of addictions,” said Emily Noble, president of the Canadian Teachers’ Federation.

The union will be lobbying politicians at all levels to fund more education about the safe use of technology, she said, which was already a priority but has taken on a new meaning following Brandon’s death.

“This shines a light that these things are happening,” she said. “We as adults tended to dismiss it before.”

Stephen Kline, a researcher with Simon Fraser University who has studied youth and compulsive gaming, said the sad ending to Brandon’s life will make it difficult for parents to act if they see their children growing increasingly preoccupied with gaming.

“Coming out of this, I think a lot of parents will say, ‘Well, what can I do? I can’t take the game away. I think my kid will do a bump,” he said. “There’s a deep lack of information about what to do.”

The 10 days police spent scouring the area near Barrie, Ont., where Brandon was last sighted did not cover the exact spot where he was found, police said.

“We had not searched that area and that really wasn’t the area we were focused on,” Goodbrand said.

“We based our search on the area where he was last seen.”

Brandon’s parents were expected to make a statement next week.

His funeral was planned for 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Mary’s Church in Barrie.
